SYMPTOM The engine occasionally idles at too high a speed, or the idle speed fluctuates. PROBABLE CAUSES 1996–97: • Loose or corroded engine or body ground • High resistance in the TPS (throttle position sensor) ground circuit • Fuel pressure regulator is leaking fuel into the intake manifold • IAC (idle air control) motor is moving slowly or sticking intermittently 1998–99: • Loose or corroded engine or body ground • High resistance in the TPS ground circuit • Cracked intake manifold gasket • IAC (idle air control) motor is moving slowly or sticking intermittently • PSP (power steering pressure) switch is grounded • The PCM delays the switch, or does not switch, to feedback idle control (1999 with A/T and California emissions only)
• Fuel pressure regulator is leaking fuel into the intake manifold CORRECTIVE ACTION Diagnose the cause of the idle condition, and select the proper REPAIR PROCEDURE. DIAGNOSIS 1. Find out from the customer when the high or erratic idle condition occurs, and the RPM range. • Within 20 minutes of a cold start • After braking to a stop • All the time • Intermittently, with no set pattern • If the idle speed ever exceeds 1,300 rpm 2. Remove the vacuum hose from the fuel pressure regulator, then start the engine. • If fuel comes out of the fuel pressure regulator vacuum hose connection, go to REPAIR PROCEDURE – FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR. • If no fuel comes out of the regulator, reconnect the vacuum hose and continue to step 3. 3. Connect the PGM Tester. Set it to Engine Data List. 4. Have an assistant drive the vehicle under the conditions described by the customer.
