High mounted stop lamp 1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal. 2. Open the trunk lid and then disconnect the connector of high mounted stop lamp. 3. Remove the package tray. 4. TIMING BELT NOTE: On some models, engine is equipped with a timing belt and timing chain. Inspect timing chain when replacing timing belt. Removal 1. Remove the engine cover. See Fig. 1 . 2. Remove right front wheel. 3. Remove right side cover. See Fig. 2 . NOTE: 4. Set the jack to the engine oil pan. Remove the engine mount bracket. See Fig. 3 . Remove the stay plate. See Fig. 4 . 5. Temporarily loosen the water pump pulley bolts. 6. Remove alternator belt. 7. Remove air compressor belt. 8. Remove power steering belt. 9. Remove water pump pulley. 10. Remove timing belt upper cover. See Fig. 5 . 11. Turn the crankshaft pulley, and align its groove with timing mark “T” on the timing belt cover. See Fig. 6 . 12. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt and crankshaft pulley. See Fig. 7 . 13. Remove the crankshaft flange. See Fig. 8 . 14. Remove the timing belt lower cover. See Fig. 9 .
NOTE: Place wooden block between the jack and engine oil pan. If the timing belt is reused, make an arrow indicating the turning direction to make sure that the belt is reinstalled in the same direction as before. 15. 16. 17. 18. Remove the timing belt tensioner and timing belt. See Fig. 10 and Fig. 11 . Remove the bolt and timing belt idler. See Fig. 12 . Remove the crankshaft sprocket. See Fig. 13 . Remove the cylinder head cover. Remove the spark plug cable. Remove the accelerator cable from the cylinder head cover. See Fig. 14 . Remove the PCV hose and breather hose. See Fig. 15 . Remove the cylinder head cover. See Fig. 16 . CAUTION: Be careful not to damage the cylinder head and valve lifter with the wrench. 19. Hold the hexagonal head wrench portion of the camshaft with a wrench, and remove the bolt and camshaft sprocket. See Fig. 17 . Inspection Check belt teeth for cracks, damage, and oil contamination. Inspect all sprockets for damage. Check tensioner pulley and idler pulley for grease leakage and worn bearings. Replace components if damaged. Installation 1. Install the camshaft sprocket and tighten the bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Temporarily install the camshaft sprocket bolt. Hold the hexagonal head wrench portion of the camshaft with a wrench, and tighten the camshaft sprocket bolt. See Fig. 17 . 2. Install cylinder head cover. See Fig. 16 . Install the PCV hose and breather hose. See Fig. 15 . Install the accelerator cable to the cylinder head cover. See Fig. 14 .
Install the spark plug cable. 3. Install the crankshaft sprocket. See Fig. 13 . 4. Align the timing marks of the camshaft sprocket and crankshaft sprocket with the No. 1 piston placed at top dead center and its compression stroke. See Fig. 18 and Fig. 19 . 5. Install the idler pulley and tighten the bolt to the specified torque. See Fig. 12 . See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . 6. Temporarily install the timing belt tensioner with plain washer. See Fig. 20 . 7. Install belt so as not to give slack at each center of shaft. Install timing belt starting with crankshaft sprocket, idler pulley, camshaft sprocket to timing belt tensioner. See Fig. 21 . 8. Temporarily fasten tensioner pulley by center bolt to add force at belt. 9. Adjust timing belt tension. Rotate crankshaft in regular direction (clockwise view from front) through angle equivalent to 2 teeth (18°) of camshaft sprocket. See Fig. 22 .

1. Remove the air intake hose connected to the throttle body. 2. Remove the accelerator and cruise control cables. 3. Remove the engine coolant hose and throttle body. 4. Remove the P.C.V. hose and brake booster vacuum hoses. 5. Disconnect the vacuum hose connections. 6. Remove the surge tank stay. 7. Bleed off the pressure in the fuel pipe line to prevent the fuel from spilling. 8. Disconnect the connector from high pressure hose. 9. Remove the surge tank and gasket. 10. Disconnect the fuel injector harness connector.
11. Remove the delivery pipe with the fuel injector and the pressure regulator. NOTE: When the delivery pipe is removed, be careful not to drop an injector 1 of 2 2 of 2 12. Disconnect the wiring harness of the coolant sensor assembly. 13. Remove the surge tank. INSPECTION SURGE TANK AND INTAKE MANIFOLD 1. Check the surge tank and intake manifold for damage, cracking or restriction of the vacuum outlet port, water or gas passages. 2. Check for distortion on the surface using a straight edge and feeler gauge. Standard value: 0.15 mm (0.006 inch) or less Service limit: 0.2 mm (0.0078 inch) INSTALLATION 1 of 2 2 of 2 1. Install the intake manifold and delivery pipe reversing the order of the removal procedure. Tightening torque Intake manifold: 19 – 21 Nm (190 – 210 kg.cm, 14 – 15 ft. lbs.) Surge tank: 15 – 20 Nm (150 – 200 kg.cm, 11 – 14 ft. lbs.)

APPLIES TO: The following models are equipped with a new generation transaxle (oil pan on side): 1999-2003 Sonata, 2001-03 Elantra, Santa Fe, XG, 2003 Tiburon. SERVICE TIP: Zoom The following models are equipped with a new generation transaxle (oil pan on side): 1999-2003 Sonata, 2001-03 Elantra, Santa Fe, XG, 2003 Tiburon. With this transaxle, the TCM continuously monitors all the sensors and solenoids on the transaxle when the vehicle is in operation. If the TCM detects a sensor or solenoid related condition, the TCM sets the transaxle in 3rd gear fail-safe to protect the transaxle and to provide a “limp-home” mode for the customer. The TCM normally supplies 12 volts to the A/T control relay, which energizes the solenoids. If the TCM detects a condition that may prevent the correct operation of the transaxle, it turns off the current to the A/T relay, which cuts power to the solenoids. This causes the underdrive and overdrive clutches to be applied, providing 3rd gear fail-safe. The TCM then sets a DTC. If you are servicing a vehicle with a customer comment of “stuck in gear” or “won’t shift”, check for DTC in both the “Engine” and “Automatic transaxle” menus. Refer to TSB 02-40-011 or 02-40-012 to find the applicable TSB

REMOVAL 1. Lift up the vehicle and remove the wheel and tire. 2. Disconnect the wheel speed sensor from the knuckle. 3. Disconnect the brake hose from the knuckle. 4. Remove the caliper assembly and suspend it with wire. 5. Remove the split pin and drive shaft nut from the front hub. 6. Remove the 2 bolts and disconnect the ball joint from the knuckle. 7. Using a plastic hammer, disconnect the drive shaft from the axle hub. 8. Using the special tool, disconnect the tie rod end from the knuckle. NOTE: 1) Be sure to tie a cord to the special tool and to a nearby part. 2) Loosen the nut but do not remove it. 9. 10. 11. 12. DISASSEMBLY 1. Remove the brake disc from the hub. 2. Remove the snap ring. 3. Using the special tool, disconnect the hub from the knuckle. 4. Using the special tool, remove the wheel bearing inner race from the hub. 5. Using the special tool, remove the wheel bearing outer race from the knuckle.
INSPECTION 1. Check the hub for cracks and splines for wear. 2. Check the snap ring for crack or damage. 3. Check the knuckle inner surface for scoring and cracks. REASSEMBLY 1. Apply thin coat of multi-purpose grease to the knuckle and bearing contact surface. 2. Using the special tool, press-in the bearing to the knuckle. NOTE: 1. Do not press the inner race of wheel bearing. That will cause damage of the bearing assembly. 2. When installing bearing assembly, always use the new one. 3. Install the snap ring into the groove of knuckle. 4. Using the special tool, press-in the hub to the knuckle. NOTE: Do not press the outer race of the wheel bearing. That will cause damage of the bearing assembly. 5. Tighten the hub to the knuckle to 200 Nm (2000 kg-cm, 148 ft. lbs.) with the special tool. 6. Rotate the hub to seat the bearing.

MANUAL TRANSAXLE REMOVAL 1. Remove the battery (-) cable. 2. Remove the air duct. 3. 4. 5. 6. Remove the air cleaner and air flow hose assembly. Disconnect the backup light switch connector. Disconnect the clutch tube and clip. Remove the clutch release cylinder. 7. Remove the speedometer cable. 8. Remove the select cable and shift cable. 9. Remove the starter motor mounting bolts and the transaxle assembly upper connecting bolts. 10. Attach an engine host to the engine hooks. 11. Remove the transaxle mounting bracket and insulator. 12. Lift up the vehicle. 13. Remove the front tire. 14. Remove the under cover. 17. Remove the transaxle rear mounting bracket. 18. Remove the transaxle front mounting bracket. 19. 20. 21. 22. Remove the front roll stopper mounting bolts. Remove the rear roll stopper mounting bolts. Remove the center member from the body. Remove the bell housing cover. NOTE: When supporting the transaxle assembly, make sure that the lifting force is applied to a wide area, not to a small localized area. 23. Remove the transaxle assembly lower mounting bolts with the transaxle assembly supported by a jack. 24. Remove the transaxle assembly. INSTALLATION 1. Installation is the reverse of removal.

CAUTION: This application is an interference engine. Do not rotate camshaft or crankshaft when timing belt is removed, or engine damage may occur. TIMING & COUNTERBALANCE SHAFT BELTS Removal CAUTION: DO NOT rotate engine counterclockwise (as viewed from timing belt end of engine). If reusing timing belt, place reference mark on timing belt to indicate direction of rotation before removing. 1. Remove drive belts and drive pulleys from crankshaft and water pump. Remove timing belt covers. To align timing marks, rotate engine clockwise so No. 1 cylinder is at TDC of compression stroke. Ensure camshaft sprocket timing marks align with upper surface of rocker cover. Dowel pin of camshaft sprocket should be pointing upward. See Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 . 2. Remove timing belt auto tensioner. If reusing timing belt, place mark on timing belt to indicate direction of belt rotation. Remove timing belt.
Remove camshaft sprockets. 3. Remove plug at left side of block and insert a screwdriver to hold left counterbalance shaft in position. Screwdriver will have to be inserted at least 2.36″ (60 mm). Remove oil pump sprocket nut and sprocket. See Fig. 2 . 4. Loosen right counterbalance shaft sprocket mounting bolt. Remove tensioner “B” and timing belt “B”. See Fig. 2 . Remove crankshaft sprocket “B” from crankshaft. Inspection 1. Check belt teeth for cracks, damage and oil contamination. Inspect sprockets for damage. Check tensioner pulley and idler pulley for grease leakage and roughness in rotation. Check sprockets and pulleys for wear, cracks or damage. Replace components if necessary. 2. Measure protrusion of auto tensioner rod. From end of housing, auto tensioner rod should extend .55″ (14 mm) on Sonata or .57″ (15 mm) on Santa Fe. Replace auto tensioner rod, if not within specification.
Place tensioner in a soft-jawed vise, and test resistance of rod. If rod can be easily pushed in with light vise pressure, replace auto tensioner. Installation 1. Install crankshaft sprocket “B” onto crankshaft. Ensure flange is properly positioned. Lightly oil outer surface of spacer, and then install spacer onto right counterbalance shaft, with rounded edge of spacer inward. 2. Install counterbalance shaft sprocket. Tighten flange bolt tightly by hand. Align timing marks on each sprocket and on front case. 3. When installing timing belt “B”, ensure there is no slack in tension side. Install tensioner “B” in center of pulley of left side of mounting bolt, and in pulley flange toward front of engine. See Fig. 3 . Align timing mark of right counterbalance shaft sprocket with timing mark on front case. 4. To tighten timing belt “B”, lift tensioner “B” so tension side is pulled tight. Tighten bolt to secure tensioner “B”. DO NOT turn shaft, or belt will be over-tightened. 5. Ensure timing marks are aligned. Ensure center of span on tension side of timing belt “B” can be depressed by hand. Ensure belt deflection is .20-.28″ (5-7 mm). 6. Install crankshaft sprocket flange and sprocket. Ensure flange is mounted in proper direction, with chamfered side toward block. Install special washer and sprocket bolt to crankshaft. Tighten sprocket bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . 7. Insert long screwdriver through plug hole in left side of cylinder block to hold counterbalance shaft in position. Install oil pump sprocket, and tighten nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install camshaft sprockets, and tighten bolts. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . 8. If auto tensioner rod is fully extended, place it in soft-jawed vise, and compress rod slowly until hole in rod lines up with hole in auto tensioner housing. Insert stiff wire to hold rod in this position. Install auto tensioner, leaving wire in place. CAUTION: If timing marks on camshaft sprockets do not line up properly, DO NOT rotate sprocket more than 2 teeth in either direction, or valve and piston will touch. If necessary to rotate camshaft sprocket more than 2 teeth, rotate crankshaft sprocket counterclockwise first based on the timing mark. After camshaft sprocket is properly timed, return crankshaft to TDC. 9. Install tensioner pulley onto tensioner arm (on 1999-01 models, pin holes should be in approximately 8

This TSB supersedes TSB# 05-40-006-1 to include 2006 Azera. DESCRIPTION: Incorrect operation of the transaxle solenoids may result in the following three symptoms: 1. Check Engine Light illuminated 2. Transaxle held in 3rd gear “fail-safe” 3. Diagnostic Trouble Codes P0740, P0741, P0742, P0743, P0746, P0748, P0750, P0755, P0760, P0765 or P0770 set NOTE: Do NOT replace the transaxle for solenoid codes listed as open/short. Instead, follow the repair procedure shown below. REPAIR PROCEDURE: 1. Using a Hi-Scan Pro, check for DTC in both the “Engine” and “Automatic Transaxle” menus. Record the DTC and description. 2. From the Hi-Scan Pro, select: • • • • “Hyundai Diagnosis” menu Vehicle “Auto Transaxle” menu “Actuation Test” • Press the F1 button (STRT) and test the LR, UD, 2ND, OD, DCC and FSV solenoid (if applicable). Monitor the Hi-Scan and listen for a solenoid sound from the engine compartment.
• If Hi-Scan shows: • “TEST FAILURE” and no solenoid sound is heard, go to Step 3. • “COMPLETED” and solenoid sound is heard, the wiring between the PCM/TCM has no open or short circuits. Go to Step 5. NOTE: This test confirms only that the wiring harness does not currently have an open or short circuit. It does not confirm the proper functioning of the solenoids under all conditions of heat and vibration or a solenoid with an internal intermittent open/short condition. 3. Visually check the wiring harness between the TCM and transaxle for a damaged wire or a short circuit to ground. Disconnect the connectors to the solenoids at the transaxle and the PCM/TCM and check for a bent pin or a pin not fully inserted into the connector. If so, repair or replace the ECM control harness, P/N 914XX- XXXXX. 4. Check the harness inside the transaxle oil pan for a short circuit to ground. Replace the harness if damage is found or if three or more solenoid DTCs are found in Step 1. (Refer to TSB# 04-40-015 for instructions).

REMOVAL 1. Remove the both front wheels. 2. Drain the power steering fluid by disconnecting the return hose (A). 3. Disconnect the pressure tube (A) from the power steering pump by loosening the eye bolt. 4. Disconnect the stabilizer bar link (A) from the front strut assembly. 5 . Remove the tie-rod end split pin (A) and castle nut (B). 6. Disconnect the tie rod and (A) from the knuckle by using a SST (09568- 4A000). or 09568-34000). 7. Remove the bolt pin and nut (A) and disconnect the lower arm (B) from the knuckle. 8. Repeat on the other side. 9. Remove the bolt (A) connecting steering gear pinion shaft to universal joint. 10. Remove the front and rear roll stopper bolts (A, B). 11. Remove the muffler hanger (A). 12. Remove the sub-frame (A) and stay by loosening the bolts and nuts. 14. Disconnect the pressure tube (A) and return (B) from the valve body housing. 13. Remove the heat protector (A). 15. Remove the tube bracket bolts and nut. INSTALLATION 1. Installation is the reverse of removal. Steering Gear Box Mounting Bolt Torque 1. (Right Side – A) Vehicles equipped with the “T7″ steering gear box mounting bolt: 43-58 lbf-ft (58-79 Nm) 2. (Right side – A) Vehicles equipped with the “T10″ steering gear box mounting bolt: 65-79.6 lbf-ft (90-110 Nm) 3. (Left side – B) Torque: 65.1-79.6 lbf-ft (90-110 NM) 4. Do not tighten the “T7″ bolt to “T10″ specifications. Overtightening may cause the bolt to fail. NOTE: Be sure to connect between a tube and a hose as shown in the illustration.

CAUTION: Use Special Hub Remover/Installer and puller to separate hub from steering knuckle. Bearing damage will result if hub is removed using a hammer. Removal 1. Remove steering knuckle and hub assembly. See STEERING KNUCKLE . Install Hub Remover & Knuckle Arm Bridge Adapter on steering knuckle. See SPECIAL TOOLS table. See Fig. 6 . 2. Remove brake disc from hub. Separate hub from steering knuckle. Install Hub Bearing Remover to hub. See SPECIAL TOOLS table. Using bearing puller, remove outer bearing inner race from hub. 3. Remove seal and inner bearing inner race from steering knuckle. See Fig. 7 . Elantra, Santa Fe, Sonata, Tiburon and XG300 models use a snap ring that must be removed before inner bearing can be removed. A Front Axle Base is also used to hold knuckle in position while bearings are being removed. See SPECIAL TOOLS table. 4. On all models, use Hub Outer Bearing Remover to remove outer races from steering knuckle. See SPECIAL TOOLS table. If either race requires replacement, replace complete bearing.
Installation 1. Use handle with Hub Bearing Installer and base to install bearing races. See SPECIAL TOOLS table. Ensure races are fully seated. 2. Install brake disc on hub. Pack wheel bearings with grease. Install outer bearing into knuckle. Apply grease to seal lip and hub contact surface. 3. Use correct Seal Installer and handle. See SPECIAL TOOLS table. Install outer seal until seal is even with steering knuckle end surface. Install inner bearing into steering knuckle. 4. Using hub remover/installer, mount hub to steering knuckle. See Fig. 9 . Tighten nut on hub remover/installer tool to 170 ft. lbs. (230 N.M.). 5. Rotate hub to seat bearing. Using an INCH-lb. torque wrench, measure hub starting torque. See Fig. 9 . Starting torque should be 12 INCH lbs. (1.3 N.m) or less on Accent and Tiburon. On Elantra, Santa Fe, Sonata and XG300, starting torque should be 16 INCH lbs. (1.8 N.m) or less. 6. Using dial indicator, move hub in and out and measure axial play. Check assembly procedure if movement exceeds specification. See WHEEL BEARING under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTION. Remove hub remover/installer. 7. Using seal installer and handle, install inner seal until seal contacts bearing outer race. Coat inner seal lip with grease. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure

1. Remove the engine cover. 2. Remove the battery terminal. 3. Remove the air duct. 4. Remove the battery tray. 5. Remove the air cleaner. 6. Remove the back-up lamp switch. 7. After removing the CKP sensor, O2 sensor and oil pressure switch wiring bracket, separate the connectors. 8. Remove the brake fluid leveling sensor connector. 9. Remove the speedometer driven gear connector. 10. Remove the clutch release cylinder mounting bolt. 12. Remove the cotter pin of the select cable. (transaxle side) 13. Remove the clip of the shift cable (transaxle side). 14. Remove the clip of the select cable (transaxle side). 15. Separate the steering column shaft joint. 16. Separate the power steering oil pump hose. NOTE: Be careful not to leak after separating. 17. Separate the hose after removing the clip of the power steering return hose. 18. Remove the upper connecting transaxle bolt. 19. Separate the start motor. 20. Install the engine support fixture. 21. After removing the tire, remove the caliper. 22. Remove the transaxle side cover. 23. Remove the transaxle side under cover. 24. Separate the tie rod end. 25. Remove the wheel speed sensor and the knuckle mounting bolt. 26. Drain the oil. 27. Remove the transaxle mounting bracket. 1) Insulator bolt 2) Body side mounting bolt (Upper) Zoom 3) Body side mounting bolt (Side) Zoom 4) Transaxle side mounting bolt. 28. Remove the front roll stopper.

SUMMARY: Hyundai is recalling 393,714 M/Y 2006-2008 Sonata vehicles equipped with an advanced air bag system which features an Occupant Classification System (OCS) in the right front seat. The purpose of the OCS is to disable the right passenger seat front air bag when it detects the presence of a child restraint system or small child in the right front seat. The right front air bag is disabled to prevent injuries to a child that may result from a right front air bag inflation during a crash. CONSEQUENCE: Misclassification of a small stature adult as a child in the right front passenger seat may cause the right front air bag to not inflate in an accident that merits air bag deployment and may result in injury to the right front occupant. REMEDY: Dealers will verify that the OCS does not properly recognize a properly seated adult occupant. After verification, dealers will remove the right front seat cushion assembly and ship it to an evaluation and repair facility. This facility will evaluate and repair or reprogram the seat cushion and OCS as necessary. The recall is expected to begin on or about May 26, 2008. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1- 800-633-5151. Removal 1. Remove all drive belts. Remove crankshaft pulley and water pump pulley. Remove upper and lower timing belt covers, noting bolt lengths and locations. 2. Turn crankshaft clockwise and align timing marks so No. 1 cylinder is at TDC. Timing marks on camshaft sprockets should be aligned at upper surface of cylinder head. See Fig. 1 . Camshaft sprocket dowel pins should face upward. CAUTION: DO NOT rotate crankshaft counterclockwise (as viewed from timing belt end of engine). If reusing timing belt, mark direction of belt rotation before removing. 3. Remove timing belt automatic tensioner. See Fig. 2 . Mark timing belt to indicate original direction of rotation. Remove timing belt. 4. Remove balance shaft access plug from cylinder block.
Insert Phillips screwdriver to block left balance shaft. See Fig. 3 . Balance shaft is correctly locked in place if screwdriver can be inserted at least 2.36″ (60 mm). If not, rotate oil pump sprocket so screwdriver can be inserted to correct depth. 5. Loosen balance shaft belt tensioner bolt. Remove front crankshaft sprocket and flange. Remove balance shaft timing belt. Inspection 1. Check belt teeth for damage and oil contamination. Inspect belt for glossy, hardened or non-elastic surface. Ensure belt is not cracked, separated or showing canvas fiber. 2. Inspect all sprockets for damage. Check tensioner pulley and idler pulley for grease leakage and roughness in rotation. Replace components if damaged.
3. Inspect automatic tensioner for leaks. Check rod end of automatic tensioner for wear. Measure distance from tensioner rod end to tensioner housing. Distance should be .47″ (12 mm). If not, replace automatic tensioner. NOTE: If plug at bottom of tensioner protrudes past tensioner housing, place a washer over plug to prevent contacting vise when pushing rod into tensioner housing. 4. Retract rod into tensioner housing by placing automatic tensioner assembly in a soft-jawed vise. Close vise SLOWLY to push rod back into tensioner. See Fig. 4 . 5. Replace automatic tensioner assembly if rod can be easily pushed into automatic tensioner. While automatic tensioner is in vise, align holes in end of tensioner rod and housing. Install pin through holes to lock tensioner in position.

Drain the coolant and disconnect the upper radiator hose. Remove the breather hose (between the air cleaner and the rocker cover). Remove the air-intake hose. Remove the vacuum hose, fuel hose and coolant hose. Remove the cables from the spark plugs. The cables should be removed by holding the boot portion. Remove the ignition coil. Remove the surge tank. Remove the intake manifold. Remove the heat protector and exhaust manifoldassembly Remove the coolant pump pulley and the crankshaft pulley. Remove the timing belt cover. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12. 16. Remove the gasket pieces from the cylinder block top surface and cylinder head bottom surface. NOTE: 1. Make sure that the gasket pieces do not fall in to the engine. INSPECTION 1. Check the cylinder head for cracks, damage and coolant leakage. 2. Remove scale, sealing compound and carbon deposits completely. After cleaning oil passages, apply compressed air to make certain that the passages are not clogged. 3. Check the cylinder head surface for flatness using a straight edge in the direction of A, B, …as shown. If flatness exceeds service limit in any direction, replace the cylinder head, or lightly machine the cylinder head surface. Cylinder head flatness Standard value: Less than 0.03 mm (0.0012 inch) Limit: 0.08 mm (0.0031 inch) REASSEMBLY 1. Clean all gasket surfaces of the cylinder block and the cylinder head. 2. Install a new cylinder head gasket onto the cylinder head assembly. Do not apply sealant to the gasket and do not reuse the old cylinder head gasket.

Install a dial gauge as shown in the illustration. 2. Check for axial motion end play. Limit value: 0.008 mm (0.0003 in.) or less 3. If the end play is over the limit, loosen the flange nut and tighten it again to the specified torque. Then measure it again. 4. If the end play is beyond the limit, replace the rear hub assembly.
INSTALLATION 1. Apply a thin coat of multi-purpose grease to the contact surface of the rear housing and bearing. 2. Using the special tools (09216-22100, 09532-32000) press in the bearing to the spindle. Press-in load [kg(f), lb(f)] : 4500-5000 (9921-11023) NOTE: Do not press the outer race of the bearing because that can cause damage to the bearing assembly. When installing a bearing assembly, always use a new one. 3. Install the snap ring. 4. After fitting the backing plate to the rear housing, press in the hub onto the rear housing using the special tool. NOTE: Do not press the outer race of the wheel bearing because this can cause damage to the bearing assembly.

CAUTION: This application is an interference engine. Do not rotate camshaft or crankshaft when timing belt is removed, or engine damage may occur. TIMING BELT NOTE: On some models, engine is equipped with a timing belt and timing chain. Inspect timing chain when replacing timing belt. Removal 1. Remove all drive belts and drive pulleys from crankshaft and water pump. Remove generator bolt, if necessary. Remove crankshaft pulley and water pump pulley. 2. Remove timing belt covers and gaskets, noting bolt lengths and locations. DO NOT rotate engine counterclockwise, as viewed from timing belt side of engine. Remove timing belt tensioner pulley.
3. Rotate engine clockwise to align all timing marks so No. 1 cylinder is at TDC of compression stroke. See Fig. 1 . If reusing belt, place mark on timing belt to indicate direction of belt rotation. Remove timing belt. Inspection Check belt teeth for cracks, damage, and oil contamination. Inspect all sprockets for damage. Check tensioner pulley and idler pulley for grease leakage and worn bearings. Replace components if damaged. Installation 1. Ensure camshaft and crankshaft timing marks are still aligned. Outer marks on sprockets should be aligned with rocker cover surface. Verify timing chain timing mark alignment, if necessary. See Fig. 2 . Install timing belt tensioner pulley.
Install timing belt. If reusing old belt, ensure belt is installed in original direction of rotation. 2. Loosen timing belt tensioner bolt, allowing tensioner pulley to contact belt. Tighten timing belt tensioner pulley bolt. Rotate crankshaft one turn clockwise. Realign camshaft and crankshaft timing marks. 3. Adjust timing belt tension until .15-.24″ (4-6 mm) deflection is present midway between idler pulley and camshaft sprocket, with a force of 4.4 lbs. (2 kg) applied to belt. 4. Rotate engine clockwise 2 revolutions. Ensure timing marks are still aligned and proper belt tension still exists. Install timing belt covers. Install crankshaft pulley. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Adjust drive belt to proper tension.

Service Procedure NOTE: Both pulse generator-B inspection and TCM reprogramming procedures should be performed. PULSE GENERATOR-B INSPECTION PROCEDURE: 1. Open and secure the hood. 2. Remove the resonator. 3. Locate the pulse generator under the battery tray. Disconnect the pulse generator connector (blue) and remove the pulse generator male connector (black) from the bracket. 4. Using an ohmmeter, check the resistance between terminal No. 3 and No. 4 in the disconnected pulse generator male connector (black color). Resistance value: 215-275W (at 20°C or 68°F) If the resistance is lower or higher than the specification, replace the pulse generator (P/N 45955-22700).
If the resistance is within specification go to Step 5. 5. Clean both ends of the disconnected pulse generator connectors with aerosol electrical contact cleaner. 6. Apply contact grease (P/N 00305-F0000-39, NYOGEL 760G), into all four terminal openings of the blue female connector until each terminal opening is completely filled with grease. 7. Reconnect the pulse generator connectors and reattach the connector to the bracket. Reinstall all removed components in the reverse order of removal. TCM SPECIFICATIONS CAUTIONS BEFORE REPROGRAMMING: 1. Conduct reprogramming with the ignition key in the “ON” position. 2. Be careful not to disconnect any cables connected to the vehicle or Hi-Scan Pro during reprogramming.
3. Do not start the engine or turn the ignition key off during reprogramming. WARNING: If reprogramming is interrupted, the manual update procedure must be used. 4. When the reprogramming is completed, turn off the ignition key for 20 seconds before starting the engine. TCM REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE: 1. Insert the 16 MB reprogramming card into the top slot of the Hi-Scan Pro. 2. Connect the reprogramming adapter to the Hi-Scan Pro. 3. Connect the white reprogramming connector (2 pin or 10 pin) to the reprogramming adapter. NOTE: Use the correct connector: ^ ^ 4. Connect power to the Hi-Scan Pro from the cigarette power adapter. 5. Insert the power cable from the reprogramming adapter into the cigarette power adapter. 2000-01 Accent: White 2-pin connector. 2002 Accent: White 10-pin connector 6. Connect the cigarette power adapter into the vehicle cigarette power socket.
