Auto Repairing 2007 Honda Pilot Engine Taps/Raps Loudly When Going Into VCM Mode, or the MIL Comes On With DTC(s) P0301 Thru P0306
SYMPTOM When the engine goes into VCM mode, it makes a loud tapping or rapping noise. In addition, the MIL may come on with DTC P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, or P0306 (No. 1 thru No. 6 cylinder misfire detected). PROBABLE CAUSE One or more of the rear bank VCM rocker arm pins are sticking. CORRECTIVE ACTION Replace the intake and exhaust rocker armsand all related parts listed in this service bulletin. DIAGNOSIS 1. Remove the intake manifold: NOTE: To save time, don’t remove and plug the water (coolant) bypass hoses. Instead, unbolt the throttle body and move it to the side. • Refer to page 9-4 of the 2006–2008 Pilot Service Manual, or
• Online, enter keyword MANIFOLD, and select Intake Manifold Removal and Installation from the list. 2. Remove all theignition coils: • Refer to page 4-19 of the service manual, or • Online, enter keyword COIL, and select Ignition Coil Removal/Installation from the list. 3. Remove all the spark plugs: • Refer to page 4-22 of the service manual, or • Online, enter keyword SPARK, and select Spark Plug Inspection from the list. 4. Remove the rear cylinder head cover: • Refer to page 6-83 of the service manual, or • Online, enter keyword CYLINDER, and select Cylinder Head Cover Removal (J35Z1) from the list. 5. Attach a 19 mm wrench to the power steering pulley nut. Rotate the engine clockwise with the wrench until each rear bank cylinder goes past top dead center (TDC). (This takes several complete engine revolutions.) While turning the engine, check to see if the intake and exhaust rocker arms are opening and closing the valves at each cylinder. • If all the intake and exhaust rocker arms are opening and closing the valves, go to step 6.
• If any of the intake or exhaust rocker arms are not opening and closing the valves, go to REPAIR PROCEDURE. 6. Screw the VCS air regulator adapter, hand tight, into the port on the right side of the rocker arm bridge. VCM AIR REGULATOR VCS AIR REGULATOR ADAPTER 7. Connect the VCM air regulator to the adapter and to shop air. Adjust the regulator to 50 psi. 8. Rotate the engine the same as in step 5. • If all the intake and exhaust rocker arms are opening and closing the valves,continue with normal troubleshooting to find the cause of the engine noise. • If any of the intake or exhaust rocker arms are not opening and closing the valves, remove the regulator and the adapter, then go to REPAIR PROCEDURE.
