Auto Repairing 1997 Ford F-250/ 350/ Super Duty Axle Shaft, Hub, Oil Seal and Outer Wheel Bearing Removal And Installation
Removal NOTE : If , for any reason , the rear hub ( 1109 ) is removed from the spindle , the old hub seal must be removed and a new hub seal installed . 1 . Set the parking brake and loosen the eight axle shaft retaining bolts . 2 . Raise the vehicle to the desired working height , keeping the axle parallel with the floor . 3 . Release the parking brake and rear brake adjustment retreat , if necessary . 4 . Remove the wheel ( 1007 ) . 5 . Remove the brake drum ( 1126 ) . Push -on ( sheet metal ) drum retainer nuts can be discarded . Push -on nut follower is used for shipping purposes only and does not have a functioning vehicle . If followers do not mean on the drums , the followers can prevent the wheel from being flat against the drum , which can contribute to vibration .

6 . Place a drain pan under the axle shaft ( 4234 ) and the rear hub . Remove the eight 7/16-inch bolts and remove the axle shaft axle shaft . Axle Shaft Removal 7 . CAUTION : Nuts hub right is the right thread , the hub nut is left over yarn left . Each hub nut to nut hub stamped RH or LH Right to left hub nut . Install Locknut Wrench T85T - 4252 - AH so tangs drive tool involves four slots in the hub nut . 8 . CAUTION : The new hub nut must be installed if the hub nut comes apart during use or installation deletion . CAUTION : Under no circumstances is the electric impact tool to be used when performing this operation . NOTE: The hub nut will ratchet during this operation . Remove the hub nut ( counterclockwise for the right thread , yarn clockwise to the left ) . 9 . Install the Step Plate Adapter D80L -630 - 7 ( Part of Step Plate Adapter Set D80L - 630 - A ) or equivalent .

10 . Install 2 - Jaw Puller D80L - 1002 - L or equivalent and loosen the rear hub to the point of deletion . 11 . CAUTION : Do not drop the outer hub bearing when removing . Remove the rear hub assembly . 12 . Replace hub oil seal . See Rear Hub , Full - Floating Axle Disassembly and Assembly portion of this section . 13 . CAUTION : Extreme care must be taken not to scratch or gouge the seal or bearing surface . NOTE : rear wheel bearings and roller cone in ( 1244 ) is located in the hub of the rear oil seal . A new hub seal must be installed each time the hub assembly is removed . If after removal of the hub , the hub seal or seal inner blade fixed to the shaft , remove it as shown . 14 . Check the seal surface for scratches or damage . Check the inner shoulder of the bearing cone for damage behind . Remove all the scratches , gouges or damage or painful with No. 600 wet or dry sandpaper smooth . Installation 1 . Net spindle thoroughly after removing the rear hub , then coat the spindle with axle lubricant . 2 . NOTE : Hub bearings must prelubed with oil before installation . Use Premium Long - Life Grease XG - 1 - C or C - or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESA - B M1C75 . Wrap each cone bearings and roller bearings by means of packaging , using Premium Long - Life Grease XG - 1 - C or C - or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESA - M1C75 - B . 3 . Fill the hub cavity with 29.6 ml ( 1 oz . ) Of clean motor oil . 4 . Coat axle shaft with the recommended lubricant . 5 . NOTE : Installing the rear hub in the following manner causing outer bearing hub to act as a pilot , making installation easier . Push the rear hub ( the hub outer bearing cups sit in the outside ) to the spindle . 6 . CAUTION : The new hub nut must be installed if the hub nut comes apart during installation or removal . CAUTION : Make sure the hub nut tab is located in the keyway prior to thread engagement . Attach the hub nut on the shaft . Rotate clockwise to the right hub nut threads , thread opposite to the left . Installing the Hub Nut instalation.
