NOTE: Do not reuse the drained fluid. Use only clean ACURA DOT 3 Brake Fluid from an unopened container. Using a non-Acura brake fluid can cause corrosion and shorten the life of the system. Do not mix different brands of brake fluid; they may not be compatible. Make sure no dirt or other foreign matter is allowed to contaminates the brake fluid. Do not spill brake fluid on the vehicle, it may damage the paint; if brake fluid does contact the paint, wash it off immediately with water. The reservoir on the master cylinder must be at the MAX (upper) level mark at the start of the bleeding procedure and checked after bleeding each brake caliper. Add fluid as required.
1. Make sure the brake fluid level in the reservoir is at the MAX (upper) level line (A). 2. Slide a piece of clear plastic hose over the first bleed screw, and submerge the other end in a container of new brake fluid. 3. Have someone slowly pump the brake pedal several times, then apply steady pressure. 4. Loosen the left-front brake bleed screw to allow air to escape from the system. Then tighten the bleed screw securely. 5. Repeat the procedure for each wheel in the sequence shown following until air bubbles no longer appear in the fluid. 6. Refill the master cylinder reservoir to the MAX (upper) level line.

Just replaced the VSA modulator-control unit (VSA modulator assembly), but now you’ve got a VSA DTC 66 (pressure sensor)? Try doing the precharge brake line bleeding procedure in the applicable S/M. (Online, enter keyword PRECHARGE and select Precharge Brake Line Bleeding from the list.) When you’re done, manually clear this DTC. Don’t try clearing it with the HDS or you’ll wind up with a VSA DTC 98—a bogus DTC. (To learn more about this problem, see the December ’04 ServiceNews article “HDS Software Bug Causes Bogus VSA DTC 98.”) After doing the bleeding procedure and manually clearing DTC 66, you should be done with this repair. But if that DTC just won’t go away . . . then check out the VSA DTC 66 troubleshooting procedure. (Online, enter keywords DTC 66 and select DTC Troubleshooting: 66 from the list.)

2007–2008 Acura MDXs MIL On With DTC P0171 or P0172? Check for an Aftermarket Air Intake.pdf

2007–2008 Acura MDXs MIL On With DTC P0171 or P0172? Check for an Aftermarket Air Intake
download
Got a vehicle in your shop with the MIL on and either DTC P0171 (fuel system too lean) or DTC P0172 (fuel system too rich)? Check to see if the vehicle has an aftermarket air intake system. If it does, you’ve probably found the culprit. Aftermarket air intake systems can throw off the MAF sensor, causing either of these DTCs to set. Even worse, they can cause serious engine damage, which is not covered by warranty! (For more info, take a look at “Cold Air Intake Systems and Low-Restriction Air Filters: A Word to the Wise” in the April ’05 issue of ServiceNews.) The airflow characteristics of these aftermarket systems can vary from one to the other.
The MAF sensor provides feedback to the PCM to get the proper air/fuel ratio. If the long term fuel trim exceeds the specified limits, the PCM will set one of those DTCs. Check out the Advanced Diagnostics in ISIS for the specific DTC limits of the vehicle that you’re working on. If the vehicle’s got an aftermarket air intake system, have the service consultant talk with your client. He or she can either have the air intake system returned to stock (and return later if the DTC comes back), or he or she can take up this problem with the maker of the aftermarket air intake system. Of course, if the vehicle already has a stock air intake system . . . then it’s high time to troubleshoot.

2004–2008 Acura TL Ticking, Creaking, Popping, or Rattling From Front Door.pdf

2004–2008 Acura TL Ticking, Creaking, Popping, or Rattling From Front Door
download
Some vehicles can make an annoying ticking, creaking, popping, or rattling from the front door when you’re driving with the window all the way up. The noise goes away, though, when you lower the window just a bit. This noise comes from a stick/slip action of the door weatherstrip. A thin coat of silicone grease will get rid of that noise, but after a few months . . . it just comes back. To get rid of that noise for good, here’s what you need to do: 1. Use isopropyl alcohol to clean the surface under the front door weatherstrip. 2. Cut a 22-inch length of 1/4-inch Squeak Reduction Tape (P/N 70200-ALL-999). 3. Lift up the weatherstrip at the upper corner of the door, and apply half the tape across the top of the door surface, pressing firmly with your fingers to ensure a good bond. Then apply the other half of the tape down the back of the door surface just the same way.
When you’re done, press down on the tape where it wraps around the corner (you want a nice, smooth contour with no edges sticking up). 4. Apply Shin-Etsu Silicone Grease (P/N 08798-9013) to the inside of the front door weatherstrip. Handy Tip: A long pipe cleaner makes a great tool for applying the grease. Most retail craft stores carry long pipe cleaners and sell them in bundles of cool, assorted colors. • Fold over the end of the pipe cleaner (so there’s no sharp edges), and insert that end all the way down into the tube of grease so that you coat the pipe cleaner.

2007–2008 Acura MDX Navi Display Won’t Switch to Night Mode With Headlights Turned On

download
Got a vehicle in your shop because the navigation system display screen won’t automatically switch to Night mode when you turn on the headlights? The reason could be the dash illumination control setting. NOTE: Depending on the vehicle that you’re working on, this control could be a knob, a button, or a pair of buttons. If the control is set to full brightness when the headlights are on, it overrides automatic display mode switching and the display screen stays in Day mode no matter if the headlights are on or off. This comes in handy if you’re driving in daylight with the headlights on but you want the display screen bright so that it’s easier to read. To fix this problem, here’s what you need to do: 1. Start the engine.
2. Turn on the headlights, and adjust the dash illumination control setting from full brightness down a few clicks to middle brightness. 3. Turn off the headlights, and shut off the engine. 4. Start the engine again. 5. Cover the sunlight sensor on the dashboard with a towel to keep any light from reaching it. 6. Turn on the headlights, and watch the display screen. • If the display screen switches to Night mode, you’re done with this repair. Remove the towel from the sunlight sensor. • If the display screen stays in Day mode, refer to the Navigation System section of the applicable S/M and continue with normal troubleshooting. For more info on automatic display mode switching and for recommended display mode settings, check out System Set-up in the applicable O/M.

Currently Applies To: ’07–09 MDX, ’07–09 RDX, and ’04–08 TL Thinking about replacing a power mirror for any of these reasons? MDX and TL only • The DPMS won’t recall one or both of the power mirror memory positions. • The DPMS moves the driver’s seat back 1 inch and then stops. • Any of these B-CAN DTCs are set: MDX • DTC B2182 (left power mirror horizontal sensor signal error) • DTC B2183 (left power mirror vertical sensor signal error) • DTC B2184 (right power mirror horizontal sensor signal error) • DTC B2185 (right power mirror vertical sensor signal error) TL • DTC B1830 (right mirror horizontal sensor malfunction) • DTC B1831 (right mirror vertical sensor malfunction) • DTC B1832 (left mirror horizontal sensor malfunction)
• DTC B1833 (left mirror vertical sensor malfunction) All • The power mirror won’t automatically return from its tilt down mode when shifting from Reverse. • The power mirror chatters or flickers when you shift into Reverse or while moving it with the adjusting switch. Warranty Parts Inspection (WPI) has found that in a number of returned power mirrors, the actuator inside was the real culprit—not the entire power mirror. So before you go off and order a new power mirror, try doing this procedure first—a new actuator may be all you really need: 1. Hook up the HDS, and check for DTCs. • If you see any of the B-CAN DTCs we’ve listed here, go to step 2. • If you don’t see any DTCs, continue with normal troubleshooting.
2. From the SYSTEM SELECT menu, select BODY ELECTRICAL, then POWER SEAT/POWER MIRROR. 3. Enter the DATA LIST, and scroll down to the applicable power mirror sensor info. 4. Check the NORMAL/ABNORMAL info. • If you see ABNORMAL, go to step 5. • If you see NORMAL, continue with normal troubleshooting. 5. Swap the affected actuator with a known- good one, then clear the DTCs. 6. Use the adjusting switch to move the affected power mirror left, right, up, or down. Then recall the different mirror DPMS positions. 7. Recheck the affected power mirror sensor info in the DATA LIST. • If you now see NORMAL, replace the affected actuator. • If you still see ABNORMAL, continue with normal troubleshooting.

Got a vehicle in your shop because the wireless headphones don’t work with the RES, although they work just fine with the AM/FM radio, XM radio, or the in-dash disc changer? The digital audio lead, the digital audio sublead, or both could be the culprit. The audio for the wireless headphones is supplied by these leads to the rear controller and screen, which contains infrared sensors that transmit the digital audio signal to the headphones. If either the lead or the sublead isn’t securely plugged in at each end, or the lead or the sublead itself is bad, you can wind up with this problem. To check for and fix this problem, here’s what you need to do: 1. Refer to pages 23-112 and 23-113 of the ’07–08 MDX S/M, and enter the self-diagnostic function. (Online, enter keyword HEADPHONES and select Wireless headphones do not work . . . from the list.) 2. From the Diagnosis Menu on the overhead screen, select
1. CONNECT. Check the DIGITAL OUT status. • If you see NG in a red box, go to step 3. • If you see OK in a green box, continue with normal troubleshooting. DIGITAL LINE CONNECTION CHECK CONNECTION OK: GREEN COLOR CONNECTION NG: RED COLOR 3. Check the digital audio lead’s connector at the rear controller and screen, and make sure that it’s securely plugged in. Refer to page 23-134 of the S/M for details. (Online, enter keywords REAR CONTROLLER, and select Rear Controller and Screen Removal/Installation from the list.) • If NG in the red box now changes to OK in a green box, you’ve fixed the problem. Play a DVD in the DVD player and listen for audio in the headphones just to make sure. • If you still see NG in the red box, go to step 4.

download
On ’00 3.2TLs, and ’99–00 3.5RLs you need to initialize the OPDS (Occupant Position Detection System) whenever you replace one or both of these parts: – OPDS unit (in the seat-back) – OPDS sensor (part of the seat-back foam) If you don’t initialize the system, you’ll get an SRS DTC 15-1 (faulty OPDS unit). There are two ways to initialize the OPDS: with the PGM Tester or with the S/M procedure. We prefer using the PGM Tester, because the S/M procedure has more steps, and requires you to use the PGM Tester along with the SCS Service Connector. Here’s how to do both procedures: OPDS Initialization: PGM Tester 1. Adjust the passenger’s seat-back to an upright position, and remove anything that’s on or near the seat.
2. Make sure the PGM Tester is loaded with software version SN000 or higher, and have the PGM Tester autoprobe handy. (The autoprobe [P/N 02001373] is commonly used to troubleshoot ’92–95 vehicles.) If you can’t find it, order one from the Acura Tool and Equipment Program at 888-424-6857. OPDS Initialization: S/M Procedure 1. Do the 9-step procedure (page 23-29 of the ’99–00 3.2TL S/M or page 24-88 of the ’96–00 3.5 RL S/M). 2. Turn the ignition switch OFF (0), and disconnect the PGM Tester. 3. Erase the SRS DTC (page 23-28 of the ’99–00 3.2TL S/M or page 24-87 of the ’96–00 3.5RL S/M).

Taking the Mystery Out of the Maintenance Minder System.pdf

Taking the Mystery Out of the Maintenance Minder System.
download
To help vehicle owners know when scheduled maintenance is due, Honda has introduced the maintenance minder system in these Acura models. • ’05–06 RL • ’04–06 TL • ’06 TSX The maintenance minder system shows engine oil life in the information display to let you know when it’s time to have the engine oil replaced and regular maintenance done. There’s no longer a maintenance schedule in the O/M. The system shows engine oil life as a percentage, which drops over time as the vehicle racks up miles. It starts out at 100% with fresh engine oil, and winds down to 0%, signaling the oil life is over. The system counts down oil life based on engine operating conditions (both normal and severe). If the engine runs at higher temperatures and rpm, or at low temperatures during short trips, the oil life will deplete faster than an engine running under more normal conditions. Depending on the oil life percentage, the system shows three different messages when you turn the the ignition switch to ON (II). Here’s what you could see: The system automatically moves up maintenance items or delays them so they get done along with engine oil replacement.
For example, if tire rotation is normally done at 7,500 miles, but the oil life ends around 6,000 miles, the system will move up tire rotation. Or, if the oil life appears to be ending around 9,000 miles, the system will delay tire rotation. In either case, you would see the maintenance item code A1 in the information display. Some scheduled maintenance items are independent of the maintenance minder system. The brake fluid should be replaced every 3 years, the idle speed should be inspected every 160,000 miles, and the valves adjusted if they’re noisy. And there are driving situations where a few maintenance items deviate from the maintenance minder system. These items are affected:

2008 Acura TL Power Steering Moans or Whines During Cold Start-Up
download
SYMPTOM A moan or whine is heard when turning the steering wheel when the engine is cold. There may be air bubbles or foam in the power steering reservoir. The noise usually goes away when the engine warms up. PROBABLE CAUSE Air is entering the power steering pump through the inlet joint O-ring. This causes bubbles to form in the power steering fluid, leading to reduced pump performance. CORRECTIVE ACTION Replace the O-ring on the power steering pump inlet joint. REPAIR PROCEDURE NOTE: Some vehicles affected by Service Bulletin 08-016, Safety Recall: 2004-08 TL Power Steering Feed Hose Leak, were not correctly repaired in that the power steering inlet joint O-ring was not replaced. Before you replace the inlet joint O-ring in this procedure, check its color: • If the O-ring is not colored orange, it was not previously replaced, and this repair will correct the power steering noise at cold start-up.
• If the O-ring is orange, it was already replaced under S/B 08-016. Continue with normal troubleshooting to find the cause of the noise. 1. Remove the right side engine compartment cover (7 clips and 1 bolt). 2. Remove the bolt holding the inlet joint to the power steering pump housing. INLET JOINT BOLT 3. Place a shop towel under the pump inlet joint. 4. Twist the inlet joint back and forth until it is loose, then carefully disconnect the joint, and point the hose upward to minimize fluid loss. 5. Remove the inlet joint O-ring. 6. Apply power steering fluid to the new orange O-ring, and install the O-ring on the inlet joint. 7. Install the inlet joint, and torque its bolt to 11 N.m (8 lb-ft). 8. Top off the power steering fluid, if needed. Start the engine, and let it idle. Make sure that the noise is gone (during a cold start-up) and that the system is operating properly. 9. Reinstall the right side engine compartment cover.
